Day Treatment Program/Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Most substance abuse and addiction treatment centers provide both outpatient and inpatient treatment. Some people find traditional outpatient programs too relaxed and inpatient programs too restrictive.

Luckily, there’s another level of care to consider: day treatment, also known as partial hospitalization.

What Is A Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A day treatment or partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the most intensive form of outpatient care. Like other outpatient programs, a day treatment program lets you live at home. However, you must regularly attend treatment sessions at an addiction treatment center or hospital.

The program usually involves twenty hours of weekly treatment spread across five or six days. In contrast, a traditional outpatient program involves under nine hours of weekly treatment, while an intensive outpatient program (IOP) involves about nine hours of weekly treatment.

Most day treatment programs last two to four weeks, though some people stay in the programs for months.

When you first enter the program, a behavioral health specialist will help you create a personalized treatment plan. Depending on your needs, this plan may include:

  • medical and psychiatric care
  • cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), where you can learn to change unhealthy behaviors and develop important coping skills
  • motivational interviewing (MI), where you can learn to improve your motivation to stay sober
  • family therapy, where you and your loved ones can learn how to best navigate your recovery
  • group therapy and/or support groups, where you can connect with other people recovering from substance abuse and addiction
  • medication-assisted treatment (MAT), where doctors can use medications to reduce cravings for opioids, alcohol, or tobacco
  • wellness activities like meditation, yoga, exercise, and journaling
  • education on addiction and other mental health concerns
  • medication management

Advantages Of Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization

Like inpatient treatment, day treatment provides structured, comprehensive health care. However, it’s more flexible, as you can live at home. It’s also more affordable.

Thus, day treatment is a great option for people who need frequent care but don’t have the time or money to attend an inpatient or residential program. It can also work well as a form of continued care once you complete inpatient treatment.

In addition, because you’ll still live at home, you’ll have more opportunities to apply the skills you learn in treatment to real-world situations.

You can also receive support and encouragement from your loved ones when you return home each day, which can help you maintain recovery. Many day treatment programs offer educational programs that teach families how to most effectively provide support.

Is Day Treatment Right For You?

You may benefit from day treatment if you:

  • require frequent therapy sessions
  • don’t require 24/7 care and monitoring
  • have a strong support system at home
  • need to focus on work or school
  • have completed an inpatient program but don’t feel ready to step down to an intensive outpatient program or traditional outpatient program
  • relapsed while in a less intensive treatment program

On the other hand, you should consider inpatient treatment if you:

  • have a severe addiction
  • pose a danger to yourself or others
  • lack support at home
  • are frequently exposed to substance abuse at home

How Much Does Day Treatment Cost?

Day treatment programs often cost between $350 and $450 a day. However, the cost can vary depending on the specific program you choose, the specific treatments you receive, and other factors.

Your health insurance plan may cover some or all of your day treatment costs. Contact your insurance provider and treatment provider to determine how much you’ll need to pay.

What Happens After Day Treatment?

After completing day treatment, many people transition to intensive outpatient care or traditional outpatient care. These programs offer some of the same services as day treatment, including therapy and support groups, on more flexible schedules.
