Vermont Rehab Centers For Addiction Treatment

Vermont is one of several northeastern states that have seen a wave of drug overdose deaths and devastation in the wake of the United States opioid crisis.

In 2018, more than 120 Vermont residents died from fatal opioid overdose. With Vermont’s small population, this makes the state one of the top nationwide in drug overdose death rates.

Addiction to opiates, as well as other drugs like alcohol and cocaine, can negatively affect all areas of a person’s life. Addiction can harm physical health, mental health, hurt relationships with loved ones, and impact someone’s ability to function in their normal routine.

Overcoming substance abuse and addiction is possible. Addiction treatment centers in Vermont and surrounding states offer a range of treatment options. Treatment for drug and alcohol abuse can help residents conquer addiction and begin the path towards a rewarding future in recovery.

At Recovering Champions, we understand how hard it can be to seek help. We also know recovery is possible.

Drug And Alcohol Abuse Rates In Vermont

Addiction is a complex but treatable disease that can affect people from all walks of life. Thousands of Vermont residents seek treatment for substance abuse each year, although many more are estimated to struggle but not seek help.

According to the Vermont Department of Health and National Institute of Drug Abuse:

  • Over one-fifth of Vermont adults aged 65 and older drink alcohol at a risky level.
  • Heroin-involved overdose deaths in Vermont are on the rise.
  • The most common drugs of abuse among people who seek substance abuse treatment in Vermont are alcohol, heroin, and other opioids.
  • From 2015 to 2018, drug overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl more than tripled in Vermont.

Substance Abuse Prevention Efforts In Vermont

Vermont is one of several New England states that has prioritized a quick and data-driven response to the country’s opioid crisis and other concerns surrounding substance abuse.

As of 2016, Vermont is one of four states nationwide that has been identified by the National Safety Council as “making progress” in policy related to substance abuse and overdose prevention.

In recent years, Vermont has undertaken a number of important substance abuse prevention efforts, including:

  • creating prescription drug monitoring programs
  • increasing substance abuse screenings in schools
  • implementing harm reduction strategies and programs (e.g. needle exchange)
  • expanding available treatment for opioid abuse and addiction
  • expanding access to naloxone (Narcan)
  • passing a Good Samaritan Law, which provides limited legal protections for those who seek medical assistance for someone who’s overdosed

According to Vermont’s Department of Health, for every one fatal drug overdose in the state, there are 64 needle exchange program members, 113 people receiving some form of medication-assisted treatment, and five community opioid overdose reversals.

Vermont Alcohol And Drug Rehab Programs

According to the Vermont Department of Health, the number one barrier to substance abuse treatment for Vermonters is not feeling ready to stop drinking or using drugs.

Seeking treatment for drug or alcohol addiction can be the most difficult and most rewarding experience you ever make. Getting help for addiction is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Addiction treatment can come in many forms. For most people, addiction recovery begins with entering a medical detox program to get sober. However, this is only the first step.

Recovery from alcohol or drug addiction is a lifelong journey that may require weeks, months, or even years of treatment in a variety of settings. This may include treatment in an inpatient rehab program and outpatient counseling for ongoing support.

The type of treatment program a person may need can depend on a variety of personal factors.

These factors may include:

  • severity of drug dependence
  • how long you’ve been abusing drugs
  • amount of alcohol or drug use
  • co-occurring mental health issues
  • prior treatment history

Substance abuse treatment centers in and near Vermont may offer a range of treatment programs. By speaking to a doctor or contacting a rehab center directly, you can schedule an assessment to determine which type of treatment program is most suitable for yourself or a loved one.

Drug And Alcohol Detox

Once you’ve become addicted to drugs or alcohol, your body becomes used to having those substances in your system.

Abruptly stopping your drug or alcohol use can cause the body to go through withdrawal. This can cause physical and psychological symptoms that can range from mild to severe.

Medical detox programs offer a safe and supportive environment for getting sober. Within a detox center, patients can receive supportive medications, such as buprenorphine or methadone, to curb cravings and ease withdrawal symptoms.

Detoxification centers provide 24-hour care, which reduces the risk for relapse and ensures patients have professional support throughout the withdrawal process.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

Getting sober is only the first step of the addiction recovery process. After detox, most doctors recommend entering an inpatient or residential rehab program.

Residential treatment programs involve temporarily living within drug rehab centers for 24-hour support and structure. This is the highest level of care for people with severe or chronic addiction.

Inpatient drug rehab programs are short-term, and last between 30 to 90 days on average.

Within residential alcohol and drug treatment programs, residents may:

  • attend individual counseling
  • participate in group therapy, behavioral therapies, and other therapies
  • receive other forms of treatment based on their individual needs

Other treatments may include dual diagnosis treatment for people with co-occurring mental illness, as well as holistic therapies and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Some rehab centers also provide specialized programs tailored to meet the needs of veterans, the elderly, first responders, and people who are pregnant among others.

Outpatient Treatment Programs

Outpatient treatment programs for substance abuse can come in several formats:

  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
  • Outpatient Counseling
  • Outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
  • Aftercare Programs

The structure and level of support provided within these programs varies. Partial hospitalization programs are the most intensive form of outpatient treatment. This involves attending treatment at a recovery center for up to 25 hours per week.

Intensive outpatient programs typically involve attending treatment for a few hours a day—often in the late afternoon or evenings—three to four days per week. During this time, residents may attend individual and group counseling and check in with a medical doctor or psychiatrist.

Outpatient treatment programs are most suitable for people who:

  • are medically stable
  • have recently completed an inpatient rehab program
  • have relapsed but don’t require a higher level of care
  • are struggling in their recovery and need ongoing support

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and eating disorders are common among people who seek substance abuse treatment. Dual diagnosis treatment—which offers both drug and alcohol treatment and mental health treatment simultaneously—is the most effective type of treatment for people with one or more mental health disorders.

Not every rehab center offers dual diagnosis treatment. If you or a loved one has co-occurring disorders, make sure to look for a rehab center that offers dual diagnosis care.

Sober Living

Sober living homes offer safe and supportive housing for people in sobriety. Sober living, recovery homes, and therapeutic communities may offer onsite peer counseling and have behavioral support staff live onsite.

Residents of sober living homes may have to adhere to certain requirements. First of all, residents must remain sober. In addition, residents may be required to participate in house meetings, find employment, and attend outpatient treatment at a nearby rehab center for the duration of their stay.

What To Look For In A Rehab Center

The New England region of the United States is home to many addiction rehab centers, but not all are the same. Treatment providers can vary in their approach to addiction recovery, the quality of care they offer, and the types of treatments they provide.

When it comes to finding treatment for yourself or a loved one, the quality of care matters.

When searching for an addiction rehab center in or near Vermont, look for the following:

  • Evidence-based treatment: Evidence-based treatments are those that are proven to help people conquer addiction for good.
  • Treats your type of addiction: Finding a rehab center that has expertise in treating your specific type of addiction is crucial to ensure you find the best care.
  • Supportive environment: Entering a treatment environment that is peaceful and has supportive staff can be beneficial to mental and emotional well-being.
  • Whole-person approach: Focusing on healing the whole person in treatment—mind, body, and spirit—can increase the likelihood of making a full recovery.

Your decision on where you go for treatment may also depend on the type of insurance you have, and the level of care you need.
