New Hampshire Rehab Centers For Addiction Treatment

Across the United States, more than 20 million people struggle with some form of substance use disorder. In New Hampshire, drug and alcohol abuse affects the lives of thousands, risking serious consequences such as drug overdose, long-term organ damage, and death.

Many people turn to drugs or alcohol to get high, self-medicate, numb, and distract from other sources of stress. This may include symptoms of other mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Over time, chronic substance abuse can have devastating effects on someone’s way of life. It can affect your physical health, mental health, relationships, and your ability to work or study.

New Hampshire rehab centers offer a path for people to break free of the cycle of addiction and rebuild a healthier and more fulfilling future in recovery. Addiction treatment centers in and near New Hampshire offer a variety of treatment options, including specialized forms of treatment for people with co-occurring mental illness.

At Recovering Champions, we know that addiction recovery is possible.

Drug And Alcohol Abuse Rates In New Hampshire

New Hampshire has been one of the epicenters of the growing opioid epidemic across the nation. Since 2012, the number of drug overdose deaths in New Hampshire has risen 200 percent, largely as a result of drugs like heroin and fentanyl.

Common drugs of abuse among New Hampshire residents include:

  • heroin
  • other opioids (opiates)
  • alcohol
  • marijuana
  • stimulants
  • sedatives

Compared to the rest of the nation, New Hampshire exceeds national averages in rates of heroin use, prescription opioid abuse, and the percentage of people who have opioid use disorder (OUD).

Alcohol abuse, too, is a major problem among elderly adults and young adults. Over 80,000 residents aged 12 and older are believed to have an alcohol use disorder—the clinical term for alcohol dependence and alcoholism.

Although overdose deaths involving prescription opioids like oxycodone (OxyContin) have declined in recent years, overdose deaths involving heroin and fentanyl are on the rise.

Substance Abuse Prevention Efforts In New Hampshire

In order to combat the growing opioid crisis, the New Hampshire Department of Health has undertaken a number of efforts to prevent substance abuse and drug overdose.

One of the most critical moves New Hampshire has taken is to expand access to addiction treatment. For years, the state struggled to meet the growing demand for treatment among its residents.

Federal grants from substance abuse prevention agencies have helped New Hampshire rise to meet this demand, however, and expand substance abuse prevention efforts in the state.

Additional efforts in New Hampshire to prevent and treat substance abuse include:

  • launching the Strategic Prevention Framework Partnerships for Success program to 1) reduce underage drinking 2) reduce prescription drug misuse among adults aged 12 to 25
  • increasing state funding for contracts with substance abuse prevention providers, and treatment and recovery services
  • implementing substance abuse prevention programs in schools to expand educational outreach among teens
  • passing legislation to better control prescribing rates for opioids and opiates
  • increasing availability of naloxone, a life-saving drug that can reverse opioid overdose

New Hampshire Addiction Treatment Programs

Living with addiction can be a life-changing experience that affects how you behave, think, feel, and interact with other people—including the ones you love. Overcoming addiction to drugs or alcohol isn’t easy, but with the right substance abuse treatment, recovery is possible.

Drug rehab centers in New Hampshire and surrounding New England states offer a full continuum of care programs to help residents conquer addiction and rebuild a fulfilling future in long-term recovery.

Treatment programs for addiction can come in many forms, including:

  • Medical Detox
  • Inpatient And Residential Rehab
  • Outpatient Treatment Programs
  • Sober Living Homes
  • Aftercare Services

The type of treatment program best suited to meet your needs may depend on a number of factors related to your health and drug use. Through a clinical assessment, a doctor can determine which type of treatment is needed.

Detox Programs

Conquering addiction may require treatment at multiple levels of care, beginning with drug and alcohol detox. New Hampshire detox programs are short-term inpatient programs that serve to help residents become sober from drugs and alcohol.

These 24-hour programs offer a safe, supportive, and supervised environment for people at risk for moderate to severe withdrawal symptoms, including heart palpitations and seizures.

Drug and alcohol withdrawal can be uncomfortable at best, and dangerous at its worst. Within a detox center, residents can receive supportive medications to curb cravings and reduce the discomfort of withdrawal. Patients can also be monitored for serious health concerns and receive IV therapy for proper hydration and nourishment.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs

New Hampshire inpatient rehab programs are the highest level of care for people overcoming substance abuse and addiction. This level of care involves temporarily living in a treatment center for 24-hour recovery support and structure.

Residential treatment programs integrate a variety of treatment services to address the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of addiction. Patients within these recovery programs will attend treatment during the day according to a customized treatment schedule.

Common components of residential rehab programs include:

  • Behavioral Therapy
  • Individual and Group Therapy
  • Skill-building
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
  • Recreational Therapy
  • Yoga and Mindfulness
  • Equine Therapy
  • Relapse Prevention Planning
  • Aftercare Support

Residential rehab programs generally last between 30 to 90 days on average. During this time, patients will meet with a treatment team to develop both a short- and long-term treatment plan based on their needs.

Outpatient Treatment Programs

Outpatient treatment programs come in several forms that vary in their structure and intensity. The most intensive form of outpatient treatment is partial hospitalization—also referred to as day treatment in some states.

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) involve attending treatment at a treatment facility for up to 25 hours a week. During this time, patients may meet with a counselor, attend group therapy, and check in with a doctor or psychiatrist as needed.

Intensive outpatient treatment is less intensive than day treatment but more intensive than a standard outpatient program. Patients within intensive outpatient programs may attend treatment for a few hours in the afternoon or evening, three to four days per week.

Standard outpatient programs typically involve weekly counseling sessions, attending outpatient support groups, and medication management as needed. People who are overcoming addiction to opioids, alcohol, or cocaine may receive ongoing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) on an outpatient level.

Sober Living Homes

Having access to stable housing can be critical to support mental health and addiction recovery. Sober living homes and recovery housing offer a safe and supportive residence for people who lack a supportive home environment or have traveled far from home for treatment.

Sober living homes often require residents to adhere to community rules for the duration of their stay. The primary requirement is remaining sober. Sober living homes may also require that residents attend treatment at a nearby rehab center, participate in community meetings, and seek employment or volunteer opportunities.

Specialty Programs For Addiction

Some rehab centers in and near New Hampshire may offer specialty care programs that are tailored to meet the needs of certain populations who struggle with addiction.

This may include:

  • veterans
  • elderly populations
  • LGBT+ residents
  • pregnant residents
  • gender-specific programs
  • dual diagnosis

New Hampshire rehab centers differ in the types of alcohol and drug treatment programs they offer. Check with a rehab center to make sure they offer the type of care you or your loved one needs.

What To Look For In A Rehab Center

Finding the best treatment program for yourself or a loved one can be an intimidating process. You want to make sure to find a program that can offer the appropriate level of care and type of treatment best suited to your needs.

When searching for a rehab center in or near New Hampshire, consider looking for a recovery center that can offer the following:

  • Customized Treatment: Addiction treatment can be most effective when your treatment plan is customized according to your individual needs.
  • Evidence-Based Treatment: Evidence-based treatment refers to treatment that has proven to be effective for people recovering from addiction.
  • Wide Selection Of Therapies: Not everyone responds to certain treatments the same. Offering a variety of therapies ensures you have the opportunity to find treatment that works for you.
  • Relapse Prevention Planning: Learning how to prevent or respond to relapse in recovery is crucial. The best rehab centers integrate relapse prevention planning to ensure patients have the tools they need to succeed in recovery.

You may also need to consider factors such as travel distance and cost. Most private rehab centers accept some form of insurance. You can learn which rehab centers accept your insurance by contacting your insurance carrier or by calling rehab centers directly.
