How Your Body Processes Shrooms
Most people take shrooms orally. Street shrooms usually arrive in dried form and can be eaten as they are or cooked into food.
Once the mushrooms reach your digestive system and absorb into your small intestine, they start to take effect. Depending on the dose, this can take as little as 10 minutes or as long as 40 minutes.
The effects peak (or reach full strength) within an hour and a typical trip can last for up to six hours. The effects slow and come to an end gradually as your kidneys filter the active psilocybin from your blood.
Just because you’re not tripping anymore does not mean that psilocybin is gone from your system completely. Shrooms can be found in your system for a period of time after use depending on the kind of drug test.
How Long Do Shrooms Stay in Your Urine?
Psilocybin is detectable in your urine for a short period of time because of its small dosing and short half-life.
There are two kinds of drug tests that detect psilocybin in your urine: Abuscreen and EMIT. These are multi-tests that check your urine, blood, serum, and stomach contents for specific drug use.
However, these screens are only available privately to probation and legal departments, and they’re used only when there’s a reason to suspect that you’re using illegal psychedelic drugs.
Abuscreen and EMIT tests can both detect shrooms in your urine for up to 48 hours.
How Long Do Shrooms Stay in Your Hair?
There are no kinds of commercial hair tests that detect mushroom use as of 2019, so it’s impossible to say how long the drug can stay in your hair.
However, a research method has been developed that extracts psilocin, a metabolite of psilocybin, from hair. This method works for at least 10 days after psychedelic use, and it’s not known if it could work for even longer.
For drugs other than psilocybin, hair testing commonly works for up to 90 days post-use.
How Long Do Shrooms Stay in Your Blood?
Again, the Abuscreen and EMIT screenings are the primary way to test blood for psilocybin. These tests can detect shrooms for up to 48 hours since the last time taken.
How Long Do Shrooms Stay in Your Saliva?
Abuscreen and EMIT tests can check saliva serum for psilocybin use. Just like with urine and blood testing, these tests can potentially detect shrooms for up to 24 to 48 hours after use.
How Long Will Shrooms Show Up On A Drug Test?
The amount of time that psilocybin shows up on a drug test depends on the type of test.
However, the standard 5-panel drug test and 10-panel drug tests used by most drug testing facilities don’t usually check for psychedelic drugs, including shrooms.
It is still possible that your employer or a legal representative could check for psilocybin or other psychedelic use if they have reason to believe that you’re using it.
How To Detox Shrooms From Your System
The truth is, there’s nothing that you can do to detox from shrooms faster. Your body detoxes from drug use at a set rate, and you can’t control how long it lasts.
You may be able to support healthy detox by drinking more water, eating enough, and taking care of your body—as well as avoiding additional drug use. But that doesn’t guarantee a short duration of detox.
The factors affecting detox time include:
- Metabolism: Metabolism is not the same for everyone. Your metabolism speed depends on yourgenetics, age, weight, and lifestyle factors.
- Dosage: Large doses of shrooms take longer to clear your system. However, it’s not common to take doses larger than three or four grams.
- Frequency of use: The more often you use psilocybin, the longer it can take for the chemical to fully clear your system.
Get Treatment For Drug Abuse
If you’re stressing about the potential for psilocybin to show up on a drug test, then it’s probably time to consider treatment.
Shrooms aren’t physically addictive on their own, but they can cause psychological addiction in some cases, especially if you have risk factors or multi-substance abuse.
If you have a problem with shrooms or other drugs, then it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. The help of a certified treatment facility provides medical and social support so you can detox in relative comfort and focus on your new beginning.
Your treatment is personalized and it can include:
- Inpatient or outpatient treatment: If you need added stability during treatment, then inpatient therapy can provide that. Outpatient therapy gives you the opportunity to recover with more independence.
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy: For drug abuse, CBT is one of the most valuable tools available. It helps you understand the triggers that cause you to abuse drugs so you can avoid them.
- Social therapy: Group therapy or family therapy can provide you with a safe place to discuss the hard parts of drug abuse recovery.
